Sapienza NMLab

NMR-based Metabolomics Laboratory of Sapienza University

The NMLab of Sapienza University is an integrated system of equipment and knowledge mainly dedicated to metabolomic analysis. Its nerve center is the high-resolution NMR spectrometer JNM-ECZ 600R, equipped with a 14.09 Tesla magnet, autosampler and cryoprobe acquired thanks to the 2016 Grandi Apparecchiature funding (CIG: 7644174BEE - CUP: B86J16002900005) of the Sapienza University.

The main activities of the Laboratory are:

  • characterization of the metabolic profiles (phenotypes) of living plant and animal organisms;
  • characterization of the metabolic profiles of microbial, plant, animal and human cells in relation to genetic mutations or biotic or abiotic perturbations;
  • identification of new biomarkers to improve diagnosis and clinical prognosis;
  • identification of new metabolic targets in different human pathologies;
  • evaluation of the effect of pharmacological, dietary or behavioral interventions on the state of human and animal health;
  • evaluation of possible side effects of drug treatments;
  • evaluation of the interactions between diet, intestinal microbiota and human and animal metabolism in physiological and pathological states;
  • customization of pharmacological and/or nutritional interventions based on the individual's metabolic phenotype (Precision Medicine and Nutrition);
  • integrated characterization of plant foods in relation to origin, pedo-climatic and agronomic conditions;
  • identification of bioactive compounds in food;
  • design of functional foods and assess their impact on health;
  • evaluation of the stages of food processing for the optimization of processes;
  • evaluation of the phases of processes involved in the agricultural circular economy.

The laboratory provides the facilities and skills necessary for the preparation of samples for metabolomic analysis, the acquisition of spectra, their processing and data analysis.

The characteristics of the JNM-ECZ 600R spectrometer do not limit its application only to the field of metabolomic analysis, but rather allow its use in several research topics such as the determination of the structure of molecules, the composition of mixtures and all applications for which it is necessary to obtain high-resolution mono and two-dimensional NMR spectra.
