Abstract
Modern medicine has been largely defined by the administration of molecular medicines, small molecule, chemotherapeutic drugs which interact with endogenous biomolecules for therapeutic effect. However, in recent years the concepts of drug delivery through nanomaterial vectors and treatments using biological macromolecules (proteins, DNA, RNA) are now being realised for clinical benefit. In this seminar I will describe how we are contributing to the revolution in “macromolecular medicines” with examples from polymer-drug conjugates to treat microbial biofilms, gene delivery vectors designed for RNA vaccines and heparin mimicking nanoparticles for protein stabilisation.
