Roasting Furnaces

Le tavole che seguono fino alla XL riguardano la tecnologia del Ferro dal pretrattamento del minerale fino alle lavorazioni meccaniche. I forni di Tav, XXXIII erano usati per l’arrostimento di minerali di ferro diversi dalla pirite (limonite, magnetite, siderite). L’arrostimento era necessario per eliminare l’acqua di cristallizzazione e le impurezze solforate. Il forno di Westmann fig. 1 era alimentato a gas mentre il forno di fig. 2 bruciava carbon coke. Entrambi avevano una parte interna in materiale refrattario a circondata da una struttura in muratura b. I minerali erano caricati dall’alto. Nel forno di fig 1 il gas combustibile arrivava da j-k-h ed il comburente da f-e-g.. Le aperture di lavoro l servivano allo scarico del materiale arrostito. Il decorso dell’arrostimento veniva seguito dai fori di ispezione m. Allo stesso scopo servivano i fori e nel forno di fig. 2 nel quale il coke era caricato dall’alto mescolato con il minerale. Dalle aperture d entrava l’aria comburente e veniva prelevato il materiale arrostito.

The wall charts that follow right up to chart XL have to do with the technology of producing iron, from pretreatment of the ore through mechanical working of the metal. The furnaces in chart XXXIII were used for roasting iron ores other than pyrites (limonite, magnetite, siderite). The roasting was necessary to get rid of the water of crystallization and sulfur-containing compouns which occurred as impurities in iron ores. The Westmann furnace in Fig. 1 was fed by gas while the furnace in Fig. 2 burned coke. Both had an interior chamber made of refractory material a surrounded by a masonry structure b. The ores were loaded from above. In the furnace of Fig. 1 the combustible gas entered from j-k-h and the supporting gas from f-e-g. The openings l allowed workers to empty the furnace of the roasted material. The progress of the roasting was followed by the inspection windows m. The openings in the furnace in Fig. 2 had the same purpose; in this furnace coke mixed with ore was loaded from above. Air entered from openings d from which the treated materials were also removed.
