Illuminating Gas 2 |

The Rotary Aspirator
In this part of the system the illuminating gas was purified of its ammonia. The gas entered tower A from below F where it encountered a shower of water, and in which the ammonia contained in the gas dissolved. The ammoniacal solution was collected in K. By means of rotary aspirating pumps L or a blast of steam (Fig. 1), the gas was transported across the absorber of hydrosulfuric acid R to the gasometer (see Chart 18). In the absorber R, the gas, still rich in hydrosulfuric acid, encountered a solid mixture of ferrous sulfate, lime, and ferrous hydroxide. The H2S was extracted thus: H2S + Fe(OH)2 ® FeS + 2H2O |
